Dr. Mazzella obtained a Bachelor of Science degree with Honours in Kinesiology from Laurentian University. She always aspired to become a health care professional, but was uncertain as to which career path to take. It was not until her final year of university, that Dr. Mazzella would be introduced into the chiropractic profession through an unfortunate car accident. Like most, she was hesitant, skeptical, and unaware of chiropractic, and how it could become apart of her health care and wellbeing. However, after personally experiencing the relief, and benefits first-hand, she knew that this profession was the perfect fit for her. In 2015 she graduated with clinical honours from Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College, and is currently the owner of Back 2 Health Rehabilitation Centre in Sudbury’s Southend. Dr. Mazzella is also certified in Active Release Techniques (ART), and Contemporary Medical Acupuncture (CMAcP) through McMaster University.
From her thorough initial assessment to individualized exercise rehabilitation programs, Dr. Mazzella is heavily invested about each of her patients achieving optimal health and wellness. As an evidence-based practitioner she believes in accurately identifying and treating the origin of discomfort. She stresses on the importance of ensuring patients receive appropriate treatment, guidance, and education pertaining to their condition.
On a personal note Dr. Mazzella was an avid athlete at an early age, participating in a wide variety of sports. At the age of fifteen her main focus and passion for soccer lead her to play both at provincial and varsity levels. When not at work, she can be seen running, or weight lifting in the gym! She is an active member of the Sudbury community and is a firm believer of setting an example for her patients.
Dr. Mazzella is a member of the Canadian Chiropractic Association, Ontario Chiropractic Association and a member in good standing with the College of Chiropractors of Ontario.
Dr. Calwell’s introduction to the health professions began at the age of seven when he fractured his leg while playing soccer. Amidst all of the pain that he experienced, it was the first time that he realized how fascinated he was with the human body and how it functions. As he matured and became more involved in physical activity and sport, he was extremely motivated to discover how to maintain a healthy body, and if he did succumb to an injury or illness, it was his obligation to figure out how it occurred and what the most effective way of rehabilitating it was. His curiosity and passion for health and the human body ultimately led him to the chiropractic profession.
Dr. Calwell is an evidenced-based chiropractic practitioner and is a graduate of the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (CMCC). Prior to attending CMCC, Dr. Calwell attended Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where he competed as a varsity athlete in track and field. While at Temple, Dr. Calwell obtained a Bachelor of Science degree with Honours in Kinesiology. While attending CMCC, Dr. Calwell completed the Traditional Chinese Medicine Acupuncture course and received Clinic Honours for his success in his clinical internships. Dr. Calwell has a passion for helping people rehabilitate and recover from injuries suffered while participating in sports and everyday activities. As a past athlete, Dr. Calwell is a strong advocate of sport and physical activity. He does not believe in providing solely passive therapy. He puts an emphasis on movement and functional exercises that are meaningful to his patients.
Dr. Calwell believes in addressing both the cause and source of pain through orthopedic testing, manual soft tissue palpation as well as functional and lifestyle assessment. Dr. Calwell uses evidence-based therapy that includes soft tissue therapy, joint mobilization and manipulation, acupuncture, modalities, patient education and rehabilitation to assess and treat a variety of conditions involving the spine and extremities.
On a personal note Dr. Calwell enjoys reading, cooking, and staying active in his free time through a variety of activities including running, swimming, and weight lifting. When not at Back 2 Health, Dr. Calwell works as a running instructor and is part of a health care team which provides third party medical examinations within Greater Sudbury.
Dr. Calwell is a member of the Canadian Chiropractic Association, Ontario Chiropractic Association and a member in good standing with the College of Chiropractors of Ontario.
Chiropractors practice a drug-free, manual approach to health care that includes patient assessment, diagnosis, and treatment. In particular, chiropractors assess patients for disorders related to the spine, pelvis, extremities, and their effect on the nervous system. The chiropractors at Back 2 Health Rehabilitation Centre implement the Diversified Chiropractic Technique. They provide comprehensive care and use a combination of chiropractic adjustments, modalities, myofascial release therapy, acupuncture and/or exercise prescription to help you achieve optimal health.
Chiropractors treat problems related to the musculoskeletal system. You do not always have to be in pain to consult a chiropractor. You may be interested in prevention, wanting to learn more about your body, or improving your quality of life. These are all good reasons to consider consulting a chiropractor.
Chiropractors are highly skilled in the hands-on art of spinal adjustment. An adjustment involves applying a specific force in a precise direction to a joint that is causing pain. The purpose of the adjustment is to help restore motion or mobility, often relieving pain.
Treatment may include manipulation of joints, with the goal of decreasing discomfort by improving movement and function within that joint. When a joint is adjusted, there is a natural change in the internal pressure of that joint. This change results in the release of gas normally dissolved in the fluid, which lubricates the joint. The release of this gas may produce a "popping" sound similar to that produced when you open a can of soda.
Research continues to support the safety and efficacy of chiropractic treatment. Chiropractors are holistic practitioners, which means that we do not prescribe medication or perform surgery. As each patient is unique, each treatment and each adjustment is unique as well. Everyone is different, and we make sure that your treatment plan is structured specifically to suit your needs to get you Back 2 Health!
Contemporary medical acupuncture is a specific type of nerve stimulation technique designed to help modulate abnormal activity of the nervous system. It uses fine solid needles (acupuncture needles) that are inserted into different anatomical locations. The locations of the needles are considered neuro-functional sites, which can be stimulated manually or with electricity to help modulate pain. Treatments are individualized and structured to treat neurological dysfunction related to the clinical presentation of symptoms.
Acupuncture can be used to treat a wide variety of conditions. At Back 2 Health Rehabilitation Centre, we focus on the neuro-musculo-skeletal system with our primary emphasis on improving mobility and function, while decreasing pain.
Acupuncture can be used to treat many different types of conditions including:
Consult your chiropractor to see if acupuncture is the right choice for you.
Low-level laser therapy is the application of red and near-infrared light over injuries or wounds to improve soft tissue healing and relieve both acute and chronic pain. Low-level therapy uses cold (sub-thermal) laser light energy to direct bio-stimulative light energy to the body’s cells without injuring or damaging them in any way. The therapy is precise and accurate, offering safe and effective treatment for a wide variety of conditions
This type of device is commonly used for rehabilitation, muscle training, and prevention of disuse muscle atrophy that may occur after injuries to bones, joints, muscles, ligaments, and tendons.
This device uses electric current to help stimulate nerves for therapeutic purposes. It helps with nerve irritation and is commonly used to help decrease pain.
This modality is essentially a deeper form of TENS. It also helps with pain relief, muscle stimulation, increased local blood flow and reduction of edema.
Therapeutic ultrasound is the use of sound waves to help treat musculokeletal injuries. This device helps speed up the healing process, increase blood flow, and provide a gentle massage of muscles tendons and ligaments in the area. The overall effect of ultrasound is to decrease pain and reduce swelling or edema in the area. Treatments take between 3-5 minutes.
The Chiropractors at Back 2 Health Rehabilitation Centre are certified MRT providers. Active release technique (ART ®) is a different type of soft tissue system that is more comprehensive in managing your diagnosis. It can be used to target problematic soft tissue adhesions or ‘scarring’.
This type of soft tissue technique can be used to treat a variety of conditions including; acute/chronic tight musculature, overuse injuries, trauma, peripheral nerve entrapments, surgical scar tissue, and adhesions. IASTT also has the ability to increase blood flow to and from the area to get you Back 2 Health quickly.
What is shockwave? This therapy is used to speed up the recovery process in the body. It does this by stimulating your metabolism, while increasing blood circulation to aid in regenerating damaged tissue. Strong pulses of energy are applied to the area that has been affected to aid in stimulating cells in the body that are responsible for tissue healing.
